Why makeover your bedroom space?

Your bedroom may not be the first place guests see when they enter your home, but that’s no reason to put a bedroom remodel on the back burner. The space where you start your day, retreat to in the evening, and spend the majority of your time should be a priority, not an afterthought!

Bedroom remodeling doesn’t have to be a full renovation.

By updating just a few pieces in your space, you can easily transform your bedroom space into a perfect reflection of you.

Step 1: Choose a new bed or headboard.

A statement bed or headboard is the perfect way to begin a bedroom remodel and incorporate some of your personality and style into your space. The right choice can become a focal point and can set the tone for the design of your entire bedroom.

Style

Whether you prefer a simple shape or something a bit more elaborate, incorporating a new bed or headboard style in your bedroom is an instant update.

A platform bed with clean lines and an upholstered headboard, such as the Loft Sawyer Upholstered Bed, can be an easy bedroom upgrade if you are more of a minimalist at heart.

If you’re looking for something more extravagant, a large, standout canopy bed, such as the Clarendon Canopy Bed, may be the way to go.

Size

Your decision for bed or headboard size eventually comes down to personal preference.

Consider the measurements of your space before determining whether to upsize or downsize your bed to find that perfect bedroom balance. Measure the width of the wall you wish to put your bed against first, then go from there when determining just how large you can go when it comes to a bed or headboard.

Give yourself at least three feet of walking clearance on all sides of the bed – keep this in mind as you envision how various bed sizes and supporting furniture will look in your bedroom.

If you enjoy the big-and-bold canopy bed look, you may be worried about ceiling height rules. We have good news — while canopy beds do look incredible in rooms with vaulted ceilings and higher ceiling heights, they look wonderful in rooms with lower ceilings, too!

You only need around one foot minimum of space between the top of the bedframe and the ceiling to avoid making your bedroom feel cramped.

Material

Selecting a material for your new bed or headboard is all about finding a balance between your design preference and lifestyle. If you tend to go for the organic modern look, wood tones are a great way to add extra warmth, dimension, and a natural touch to your space. Wood is also strong and durable, so it should last a long time.

If you prefer a contemporary or industrial feel, metal is a simple, durable, and easy-to-maintain choice, especially for households with clawed furry friends.

If you want to bring a bit of softness and texture into your bedroom retreat, upholstery may be the way to go, especially if you love lounging in bed and working or watching your latest show.

Step 2: Update your supporting pieces.

Nightstands

When choosing a nightstand, think about your needs and design style. From there, you might consider whether an open or closed nightstand is right for your room.

Open or smaller nightstands, such as the Vesper Oval Nightstand, can give a light, airy feel to a space and are perfect in guest spaces where storage isn’t a necessity. This style provides a simple surface for holding personal items or a glass of water, and incorporating a basket to corral any extra items can create additional storage space while still looking nice.

Dressers

Consider both practicality and personality when choosing a dresser. You’ll want something large enough to accommodate your organizational or storage needs, but keep in mind that bigger pieces take up more room. In some cases, a low-and-wide piece might work over a style that’s tall and narrow.

When placing your pieces, there should be enough room in front of the dresser for drawers to open fully, and if you are planning to place or mount a TV above the piece, the dresser should be wider than the TV.

Benches and Accent Chairs

Adding a bench or accent chair is a great way to utilize that extra space at the end of your bed (we have a wonderful guide for choosing the perfect furniture for the end of your bed).

A bench can serve as a convenient place to tie your shoes or display your latest reads while also letting you add texture, color, and interest to your design.

Pairing two accent chairs (be sure to keep these tips in mind for choosing the perfect small accent chair) in this spot is another unique way to personalize your bedroom and elevate your level of functionality in this space. Adding a small table between your accent chairs can increase coziness and comfort levels while providing a bit of added storage, too.

Step 3: Swap out lamps and other accessories.

Varying shapes, heights, colors, and textures can add personality to your bedroom remodel, while keeping to the rule of three can keep your space from feeling cluttered. The rule of three states that grouping items in odd numbers — specifically three — is more appealing, memorable, and achieves the perfect balance when items are varied in their size, shape, color, and texture.

Lamps

Selecting the perfect piece of bedroom lighting isn’t always easy, but making one simple swap can really serve to brighten up your space. What’s wonderful about table lamps is they don’t require hardwiring and are easy to change to fit your space’s style at any given time.

Wall sconces are also a great option, though they do require some extra hardwiring. Sconces are a great way to add bedroom lighting while being easily accessible for turning on and off and for freeing up your nightstand surface area.

Accessories

Your bedroom remodel can be both functional and beautiful, and you don’t have to sacrifice one or the other when it comes to discovering that perfect arrangement when styling your nightstands and/or dressers and other pieces. Combining something sculptural — such as a unique lamp — with a small bowl for holding jewelry and a vase for fresh or faux florals can easily dress up your nightstand.

If you enjoy reading, a couple of your current books stacked on top of one another with a jewelry dish make for a great nightstand topper. Placing art or a mirror on, above, or near your nightstand can coordinate well with larger design opportunities around your bedroom.

Rugs

A rug is an easy, inexpensive way to add an immediate pop of color, pattern, or texture to your bedroom and give the space a polished, personal look.

It’s tough to know how to choose the right rug size for your space, so consider the size of your bedroom and supporting pieces when choosing a for your bedroom. Layering rugs can add both texture and interest to your space — just be sure that your top rug is one or two sizes smaller than your bottom rug.
