Scout Sessions | From Passion to Profession: Finding Your Path in the Design World

There's something fascinating about the way our true passions find us, isn't there? While I was studying biochemistry and planning a career in medicine, I was also spending my weekends redesigning my mom's living room and filling my Christmas lists with home decor. Looking back, these weren't just hobbies – they were quiet signals pointing me toward my true calling.

The Unexpected Path to Design

I started college like many of us start our careers – following the path that seemed sensible. As a biochemistry major headed for medical school, I was checking all the right boxes: good grades, clear career trajectory, proud parents. But three years in, something didn't feel quite right. I wanted a career that would allow me to help people while also building a balanced life.

This led me to nursing, a decision that felt like a compromise at the time but turned out to be invaluable preparation for my future in design. In fact, those years in the NICU taught me lessons about attention to detail and client care that still influence my approach to design today.

When Your Side Passion Takes Center Stage

While working as a nurse, I found myself increasingly drawn to design. It started simply enough – experimenting with our first apartment's aesthetic, sharing projects on a blog, helping friends with their spaces. But something interesting happened: people I'd never met started reaching out for design help. What began as friendly advice evolved into paid projects, and suddenly I was straddling two worlds.

The Turning Point: From Designer to Business Builder

I want to share the moment that transformed not just my design career, but my entire approach to business. Picture this: I'm sitting at a kitchen table with a custom home builder and architect who are, let's say, less than impressed with this nurse-turned-designer. They're questioning everything - my experience, my processes, my understanding of custom work. It's the kind of moment that either breaks you or builds you.

That kitchen table conversation became my catalyst for change. Instead of retreating, I got curious. I shadowed their supervisor, learning exactly what information they needed. I refined my presentation packets until they were flawless. Each critique became a stepping stone to something bigger.

But here's where the real transformation happened: as I elevated my processes and took on larger projects, I discovered a truth that would shape my entire business future. While I was now winning significant projects, I was charging just $6,000 for full house designs (a number that makes me smile ruefully now) and spending more time managing logistics than actually designing. I was even my own photographer…

This realization wasn't just about pricing - it revealed a fundamental gap in our industry between creative vision and business infrastructure.

Finding Purpose in the Challenge

This overwhelming period revealed something important about our industry. The magic of design isn't just in creating beautiful spaces – it's in having the right systems that allow creativity to flourish. My nursing background had taught me the value of balancing compassionate care with precise execution, and I realized design businesses needed this same harmony.

This insight became the foundation for Scout & Nimble. What started as a solution to my own challenges evolved into a mission to help other designers thrive creatively without getting buried in logistics.

Lessons Worth Sharing

Looking back, several key insights stand out:

- TRUST YOUR NATURAL INCLINATIONS: Those weekend design projects and decor-filled wish lists? They weren't just hobbies – they were clues to my true calling.

- VALUE YOUR UNIQUE BACKGROUND: My nursing experience wasn't a detour; it was preparation. It taught me how to guide people through transformative experiences with both care and precision.

- LEARN FROM CHALLENGE: Being underestimated can be a powerful motivator. Use it to fuel your growth rather than diminish your confidence.

- BUILD STRONG FOUNDATIONS: The most inspired creativity needs solid systems to truly flourish. Don't let logistics be the thing that holds your creativity back.

Where You Might Be Right Now

Perhaps you're reading this while contemplating your own transition into design, or maybe you're already in the field but feeling overwhelmed by the business side of things. Wherever you are in your journey, remember that your unique background and experiences aren't obstacles – they're assets waiting to be leveraged.
