We recently connected with Kelsey Leigh, owner and primary designer of Kelsey Leigh Design Co. and Scout & Nimble trade program member, to dive deeper into her experiences in the industry. Read on to find out a few things about her marriage to a homebuilder, what inspires her, and the challenges and rewards she’s faced in her career + a few of her favorite things.

As a vintage-modern interior designer, Kelsey Leigh provides stunning and inspirational design services nationwide to clients looking for a modern design with a historical feel for their space.

Below, she graciously shares with us what it’s like working on projects together with her homebuilder husband, where she draws inspiration for her projects, as well as what she’s learned and wants to pass on as a designer. Read to the end for some bonus content on some of Kelsey’s personal favorite things.

How did you get started with interior design? 

I married into it! It was my dream as a kid, but I didn’t have a whole lot of encouragement. Marrying a homebuilder put my dreams back on the table. I started out helping him make selections and soon we were winning awards. In 2018 I decided to start my own business, Kelsey Leigh Design Co.

How many years have you and your husband worked together?

9 years.

Do you and your husband always work together, or do you also work with other builders and he with other designers?

Since many of my projects are national, I sometimes work with other builders. Scott only works with me.

What are the challenges and best parts about working with your spouse in this industry?

We both tend to think we are right, so arguments ensue. We've learned to embrace each other's strengths, so we are quick to concede.

What would you say is your specialty/niche?

My specialty/niche is vintage-modern — a mix of old and new — classic, collected, natural, and unexpected pieces that come together in ways that feel effortless.

What’s your favorite project that showcases your style?

I have a few. My own home (Home On The Plains), Project Sugar Hill, and Project Warm Modern.

What sets you apart from other designers with similar styles? 

Approachability on all levels. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and this process isn't about us or our ego. It’s about being of service to our clients by creating spaces for meaningful moments and memories for families.

Can you give a specific project or design example of how inspiration from old movies or travel has influenced your style?

 A few of our recent McGregor Homes were inspired by a trip to 30A in Florida. I was inspired by the Cape Dutch-style homes in Rosemary Beach. I love the unique architecture and color palettes in this area. The style is unique to the area.; you know when you're in Rosemary Beach.

What's your favorite part about being a designer?

I love the transformation process. At times I can’t believe I get paid to do what comes naturally to me. Taking a concept from paper to real life never gets old.

What's the biggest challenge you've faced as a designer? How did you overcome that challenge, or how are you still working to overcome it?

 Navigating growth is difficult. It’s hard to know when to take risks and when to expand, and at times even harder to know when to be content. I’m still overcoming this. We’re always refining our process. I want our clients to have a fun, easy, and stress-free experience.

What's been the most challenging thing about a project you've worked on thus far?

It’s difficult to navigate projects when clients have a hard time making decisions and sticking with them.

What's the most valuable thing you've learned as a designer?

Design is like art, and art is subjective.

How has learning this influenced your work?

It's a healthy approach. Not everyone is going to like your design style and aesthetic, but there will be some people who love it. Understanding this helps you find the best-fitting clients and projects. 

How has learning this influenced your process for finding your ideal clients and projects?

The more work you put out that's in line with your design style, the more people who appreciate that "art" will find you. It's influenced my work in that I only showcase projects that are aligned with work that is my personal taste and what I love to do. 

What experiences in your career contributed to learning this?

In the beginning, I said yes to contemporary and glam projects. The finish wasn't satisfying because it wasn't really my design style. 

How did you learn about the Scout & Nimble trade design program?

I've followed S&N on IG for quite a while. As they have expanded their shop it was a natural fit for me to look for projects on their site.

What compelled you to join?

[The] shop is well-curated and I like being able to find what I needed quickly.

Of the products you’ve purchased from Scout & Nimble, which is your favorite?

Some cute pillows for a bunk room!

Is there anything on your wish list for future projects?

Loving all the concrete table lamps.
