We’ve been keeping something big under wraps since last summer. We teased you a little with sneak peeks and inspiration posts, and FINALLY! We are so excited to introduce you to Tri Delta Traditional. This elegant, glamorous, ummm-can-we-live-here-please sorority house in the heart of Missouri is everything we love about traditional design while still being playful, feminine, and functional. Welcome to #TriDeltaTraditional!

We were so honored to work on this incredible project. From our initial walk through, we could see the great bones of this home and we were instantly inspired. This project is unique because of its incredibly tight timeline. We only had three months to complete this total interior overhaul! Fortunately, we work with the best contractors and they were always on top of their game. In the commercial design world, you lose the flexibility of the timeline that you might have in a residential design. We worked with the contractors to create a detailed, schedule-oriented plan that would meet the deadline requirements we faced. Our processes enabled the design team and the construction team to come together and work for an overall common goal - and the results are stunning.

The Inspiration Behind Tri Delta Traditional

We are intentional about every design we put forward. While this looks different from home to home, we really had to expand our way of thinking about community living when it came to Tri Delta Traditional. The priority was to create a haven that could offer many different functional spaces while honoring the history and style of the sorority.

These spaces will always be bustling, so our design team focused on sourcing materials that would be easy to clean and stand the test of time. The checkered tiles in the foyer might look like stunning marble, but they are actually porcelain. Porcelain is tougher than marble, and in a high-traffic area, it is important that the floors don’t show wear and tear easily. The black and white checkered pattern is a staple of more traditional design styles and we love how it can be post playful and chic.

Delta Delta Delta’s colors are silver, gold, and cerulean blue, and we wanted to incorporate those colors without tying the space to one overwhelming theme. To keep the home from looking too uniform, we played with different shades of blue throughout. Subtle sky blues mingle beautifully with classic blue and navy, while creams, pinks, and white create a layered field of color.  

History and femininity also played a huge role in the way we thought about this project. This home is almost 100 years old, and the Tri Delta sisterhood is even older. Traditional architectural accents were a must in this Greek Revival home, but modern textures and materials were included to create a contemporary living space that the young women would love to spend time in.

To give a greater distinction of style between the two living spaces, we incorporated a different color story in each. The Informal Living Room features a lot of neutral tones and fun textures combined with deep blues and greens. The Formal Living Room is lighter and has fun pops of pink, gold, and white, with more traditional accents and shapes.

More Than Just a Pretty Space

Those pretty wood floors you see in the formal and informal living rooms are engineered white oak. Light-washed wood floors look amazing in spaces like these because they don’t swallow up light like a darker finish can + a matte finish will hide any scuffs or scratches better than a glossy finish. If your goal is create a peaceful, light space, we can’t recommend light-washed wood floors enough.

Clean lines and simple, architectural details will never go out of style. As the home was transformed, key design elements like custom millwork and cabinetry remained incredibly important to the team. It’s these elements that set the elegant and elevated tone of the home, while playful pops of color and texture keep things contemporary and feminine.

The sunroom is one of the sisters’ favorite rooms in the house. It has windows on three of the four walls, and is the perfect, quiet spot to study. To make it more functional, a table and chairs were added on either end of the room, while a light blue sofa was placed in between for more seating and comfort. We love how this room almost feels like an outdoor space. Even in the depths of a Missouri winter, the warm airs of spring will never feel far off in here.

Making the Most of Every Space

The back hallway sees some of the most foot traffic in the house, so selecting brick in a herringbone pattern was a simple choice. The tough bricks were softened with a runner, bringing that feminine touch the space was craving. Are you loving the dark navy vertical shiplap on the walls? That’s Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore. 

When we were doing our initial research for this project, we learned that the sisters loved to spend time together in the basement. They do crafts, watch TV and movies, and study together all in one space. To maximize on the possibilities of this room, we created a dedicated TV corner complete with new custom shelves and a comfy-as-can-be sectional. There are also several new seating areas available for crafts, homework, or just hanging out.
